In Japan, paper folding, called Origami, evolved into a highly sophisticated art, employing hundreds of intricate folds and was valued for ceremonial and decorative functions. Two types are recognized, Traditional and Creative. Traditional, the earlier, dates back to 1682, its figures tend to be simpler in form than the latter. Creative Origami, in contrast, has become popular since the middle 1940's. Its forms tend to be more complicated, sometimes by utilizing scissor cuts. In essence the art of Origami gives a spirit of life to a rather auspicious object, a sheet of paper, which can surprise and delight even the most discriminating.
